Projects

We have a number of projects and initiatives underway at various stages of development. For some it’s too early to release details while others are already taking shape.

Film Wight

While the Island has been the location for productions in the past, thanks to the work of various people and groups, there has not been a singular initiative that has been endorsed by the IW Council and therefore eligible to be promoted alongside other regions by Creative England/ Filming in England or Film Offices UK. We are now listed as an official film office and fully recognised by national bodies to help make the Island better known and attractive to makers of film, TV and video productions. We have negotiated free travel for validated recces and discounted travel for productions. We are responsible for granting filming permits, road closures etc and sharing opportunities with local service providers. We supported a team who wished to create a Film Studio on the Island and are delighted that he project has acquired land, planning permission and looking forward to it being completed soon.

A single production can promote the Island as a tourist destination and provide jobs and business to many sectors from film professionals, to trades and accommodation providers. We are also seeking partners to establish film businesses on the island in post-production, animation etc many of which function well remotely and can provide jobs and training.

Connected Wight

Working with partners, we facilitated sessions with representatives of many organisations in the private and public sector, individuals and media. The objective was discover what would best help communicate what the Isle of Wight is today, so people looking for a rounded picture of all of the island could find out, in one place. The resulting project, to which we also contributed seed funding, delivered Connected Wight. We continue to be on it’s management board, helping to develop and grow it to the next level.

Connected Wight is a portal – celebrating the Isle of Wight as the world’s most eclectic island. It reminds Islanders of where they live and what they have in abundance. And for those who might want to live, work, invest and grow here, it shines a light on life, culture, sports, innovation, and personality within a beautiful, inspirational UNESCO UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Our sources highlight local achievements across 9 carefully connected sectors. Connected Wight has access to contributors and content that bring this glorious place to life for all, at the same time unlocking societal and economic potential of this remarkable piece of geography.

Repurposing

The Island has many buildings and packets of land which is no longer appropriate for the uses for which they were intended and have been a burden on the public purse. We are creating a directory of these places with the IW Council and identifying how they can be put to use by partners with the vision and business models to make them work.

We have hosted visits by mainland specialists, experienced in creating remote working hubs, galleries and other relevant uses for redundant spaces and have learned from their previous ventures. Those lessons are helping is identify the opportunities and shape propositions to partners.
